Mayers Eye Solutions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept most medical insurances including Medicare?
Yes. If you have a medical complaint such as headaches, red eyes, dry eyes, eye pain, eye itching or burning, glaucoma, cataracts, flashes or floaters most medical insurances will cover the cost of the eye exam less deductibles and copays.

Do you accept vision insurance?
Yes. Some vision insurances are accepted. Please call the office to see if Mayers Eye Solutions is a provider.

I need bifocals and I would like to wear contacts but I can't seem to find the right solution. Is there anything new to help?
Yes! There are many options when trying to find the right combination that fits your lifestyle. Many companies manufacture bifocal contact lenses that tend to have good success. Dr. Mayers will trial many different combinations and let you experience them to see what fits your visual demands the best.

At what age should my kids be checked?
If your kids are older than 6 months of age then they are ready for an eye exam! Visual development, learning, and coordination start with having a clear image focused on the back both eyes. One eye may be lazy (amblyopia) and you may never discover it because the child uses their "good eye" to adapt to their environment. With only one "good eye," depth perception is affected, reading is more challenging, and overall day to day tasks are more difficult! Studies have shown that up to 20% of school age children have a visual problem that has not been detected.
How do you check the prescription in children so young?
Eye doctors are able to check their prescription by performing a test called retinoscopy. This test shines a streak of light into the patient's eye and we are able to record the patients prescription.
What does 20/20 mean?
20/20 is the standard set by most eye doctors to express the visual acuity (clarity or sharpness of vision) at a distance of 20 feet.
My vision without correction is 20/100. What does that mean?
It means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a normal (20/20 eye) can see an object at 100 feet.
Isn't saline the same thing as a contact lens solution?
NO! A contact lens solution has disinfection properties to kill microorganisms (germs) and other chemicals that keep your lenses feeling comfortable. Saline is a good solution to wash your lenses after soaking in contact lens solution overnight or to wash your eye if you get a foreign substance in it, but it has NO disinfection properties.
